Planning a Baby Shower? These Tips Make It Stress Free

Written by rob on Saturday, September 29th, 2007 in stress.

Tip! Focus on your major goal and do something to move it forward. You will feel a sense of accomplishment, and your stressful situation will occupy a smaller place in your life.

One of the most pleasant parties to plan has to be the baby shower. The mom-to-be gets so much attention and she can just sit back and enjoy all of the fuss. The key to creating this wonderful event is organization. Here’s everything you need to make your upcoming baby shower as festive and memorable as possible!

Consult, Consult, Consult!

Because the parents-to-be may have more than one shower, it’s a good idea to consult with the mommy-to-be. Before you send out invitations, sit down with the mom-to-be and ask her what she would like from this event. What is her idea of a fun shower and who she would like to attend? Most people shouldn’t be expected to attend several showers for the same parents, so find out what else is being planned. Let her know that you want her to feel comfortable and most of all, to have fun.

Tip! Get plenty of sleep and rest. Sleep deprivation is a major cause of burnout, stress and anxiety.

What if you are having a surprise shower? Don’t let that stop you from consulting! Talk to the dad-to-be to get ideas of a guest list and an appropriate time. You might even want to consult with other friends to be sure that everything works out smoothly. Again, consider the mom-to-be when having a shower. You want her to feel special, have fun, and be comfortable.

After consulting with the mom-to-be, or others, it is time to plan!

Tip! Monitor stress levels. No, you don’t need an 80-question stress climate survey or bureaucratic stress management standards.

The Theme of the Day

This is the fun part - deciding what you are going to do and how you are going to do it! This can also be the overwhelming part if you have never planned a baby shower before or if you don’t feel that you are the creative type. Luckily, you don’t’ have to have experience or creativity to throw a great baby shower.

Tip! Learn yoga or tai chi, perfect pastimes for reducing stress.

Some showers are simply a gathering of family and friends chatting, mom-to-be opening her gifts, and eating yummy food. Other showers are more elaborate with special games. If you are thinking of being more elaborate and having a theme, here are some great ideas to get you started:

Consider inviting couples instead of just the ladies. You can play fun games like who can diaper the baby doll the fastest and make it the men against the women. This shower is great for first-time-dads and helps them feel a part of things as the ‘big day’ nears.

Does mom-to-be already have everything she needs for baby, but you still want to celebrate this special occasion? Why not throw a Mommy Shower? Instruct guests to bring gifts for mom herself (bath and beauty products, gift certificates, etc). You might also consider a “consumable shower” and have guests bring diapers, wipes, shampoo, and other items that run out!

Tip! You should spend time on wholesome activities. Swimming, cycling and walking are some of the worthwhile activities that will enable you to release your stress and anxieties.

A recipe shower is a great idea. Instead of a card, ask guests to bring their favorite easy-to-make recipes for mom-to-be to use after the little one arrives. Or go one better and have the guests bring a dish ready to be frozen for the mom-to-be for those days when she is just too worn out to cook!

Here’s a fun shower that will help the guests determine what to bring as a gift. In the invitations, assign each guest a random time of day and have them bring an appropriate gift. For example, blankets for naptime. Or assign each guest a different room of the house, like the bathroom, and have them bring an appropriate gift.

Tip! Offer stress management workshops and literature. Even if there are no current stress problems offer the workshops anyway.

Have guests bring something that was a favorite of theirs from their childhood for the new baby. Books, movies, security blanket and etc make great gifts with added special meaning.

Have a birthday party! Get a birthday cake, streamers, party hats, and party games! Can you think of a better way to celebrate a birth?

Once you set a date and make a guest list, and pick your theme, you will need to choose a location. It is perfectly fine to have the shower in your own home, but it can be anywhere with enough space. Depending upon your theme, you may even choose a restaurant or an out of the way tearoom!

Turn Stress Into Energy And Enthusiasm. Pressure Proof your life from stress, pressure and burnout - over 81 proven strategies.

As the Date Nears

Now that the big decisions are over, you can take a deep breath. You are almost there! As the shower date approaches, however, you may again feel a bit of stress. Do you have everything? Have all the details been taken care of? Here is a great list to help you know the answers to those questions.

Two To Three Weeks Before The Event:

  • Prepare and mail invitations with directions to event. Be sure to keep one for the baby book!

  • Place order for the cake if ordering from a bakery.

Tip! Identify the source of your stress 2. Create ways to cope with the stress 3.

  • Choose and purchase decorations and party favors.

  • Purchase prizes for games.

One Week Before The Event:

  • Determine an accurate guest count.

  • Make follow-up calls, if necessary.

One Day Before The Event:

  • Purchase food and prepare platters and/or pick up any special food platters ordered.

  • Purchase beverages.

  • Make sure camera has film and/or video camera is loaded and has batteries, etc.

  • Wrap gifts for game winners and review instructions for games.

  • Clean house and party area.

Day Of The Event

  • Decorate

  • Buy any last minute items

  • Prepare area for gifts

  • Prepare table for the food

  • And most importantly - HAVE FUN!

Tip! Keep referring to stress in newsletters, speeches and meetings. Put stress reduction on the agenda of management meetings and have a set section in the newsletter.

That’s all there is to it! You are now ready to throw a memory-filled baby shower for a special mom-to-be.

Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Phobias - Do Miracle Cures Really Exist?

Written by rob on Saturday, September 29th, 2007 in anxiety.

Get Ultimate Power Over Your Anxiety! Learn the secrets to cure anxiety without medication. And the best part is. you can learn these techniques in just 10 minutes.

Everyone who has anxiety just wants to get rid of it. Many therapists, some of them unscrupulous, lure desperate sufferers by promising that anxiety can “evaporate”, “float away” or “disappear”. It seldom does, especially using their flawed and expensive gimmicks. The chances are you already know this. Most of the therapists that use such language are either charging a high hourly rate for weekly sessions which in the long term achieve little, or are selling an equally expensive “programme” or “system”. They are not all con-artists, some of them believe in their techniques for good reason: they have helped stressed-out professionals to relax a little or a down-in-the-dumps widow’s mood to lift. They, by and large, have not cured anxiety and, although they may well be full of anecdotes, they can not produce living examples or peer reviewed statistical evidence that supports them. Often they tell you how frustrated they are that the medical profession will not accept them. The medical profession, arrogant and backward as it can be, has good reason to be suspicious.

Tip! Get support from your friends, doctor, and a therapist if necessary. Check your area for panic/anxiety support or treatment groups! Regular use of anti-anxiety medications may be better than just taking your prescription only after the panic has begun.

So if miracle cures do not exist then what help is there for you? Plenty! As while instantaneous miracles do not occur you can make changes which will permanently free you from your anxiety and panic. On my website I have listed some of the therapies I have used and comment on their efficacy. Often it won’t be quick, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. If I were you I’d, right now, give yourself permission to take as long as you need to overcome your anxiety; better that it takes a year and works than having it fail in two weeks. At the same time, paradoxically, you should be open to the idea of being free of it much sooner. I say ‘be open to the idea’ don’t grasp it and demand an instant cure.

Here’s my advice, as an ex-sufferer:

1) Let go of wanting an instant cure. Be prepared to earn your cure and become a stronger person. Remember that it doesn’t have to be awful.

Tip! Finding out a practical cure for the problem, is an action part of the whole exercise. While anxiety relief is possible by resorting to drugs, medication and psycho-counseling, the role of natural anxiety relief measures can’t be simply overlooked.

How would you feel if your anxiety or panic evaporated or somehow just disappeared? Most anxiety sufferers would say they would feel amazing and over the moon! But would they? Actually you don’t feel anxiety most of the time anyway, so in a sense your anxiety disappears all the time. You consider yourself to have anxiety, though, as you know it will come back. So how would you know if say your hypnotherapist made your anxiety disappear? Some days without anxiety would pass and gradually it would, one presumes, fade into your personal history. But you would never be sure, and one day the natural emotion and symptoms of anxiety or panic would rear their ugly head and you would be back to square one. How can I be sure? I’ve been there. Everyone feels the symptoms of anxiety at sometime in their life although not everyone labels them as such. I had had full blown panic attacks and lengthy periods of anxiety so I was sensitized to recognise the very first signs, the feeling in the pit of my stomach that “normal” people would call nervousness. As soon as I felt those natural feelings again I was right back where I had started.

Tip! Exercise and eat right. You’ll be making yourself look and feel better and consequently stronger through the process for overcoming depression, anxiety and becoming worry free.

I tell you this to stress my belief that you can’t just take away the anxiety, you also have to remove your fear of anxiety returning and your label of yourself as an anxious person. For me, the path to no longer having anxiety was a series of steps and small jumps. No one made me believe I was over my anxiety, I proved it to myself as I lived my life. Things that you learn yourself through experience are far more embedded in you than things you are told, ask any teacher! And you want to be permanently free of anxiety, don’t you?

Tip! Isolation is another problem experienced by stress, depression and anxiety sufferers. OK, there will be times when you just want your own company.

So despite the fact that doctors seem to prefer to talk about controlling rather than curing anxiety I am not afraid to describe myself as cured. I am cured because I no longer have anxiety, am not scared of it returning, and consider myself to be as normal and able as the next person.

There are three important things there. Firstly I had to learn to not fear anxiety returning. That was most important. Secondly I had to respect myself and understand that I was as capable and good as the next person, and that the time I had “wasted” in having anxiety, and the things I had missed were still obtainable.

Tip! Stop beating yourself up. Self-deprecation is a huge part of stress, depression and anxiety.

2) It is better to have exciting things in front of you rather than behind you. Often the anxiety sufferer can feel amazingly low self esteem as they see the world pass them by. Changing self-image can be an important part of the recovery.

3) Be open to the idea that there may be a positive outcome. Often sufferers are told to “think positive”. Such a statement is a waste of breath. On the other hand many people feel, after trying out a few flawed therapies, that they are incurable, that nothing can help them. I learnt early on to just be open to the possibility that I might actually get over my anxiety. To believe in the possibility of a positive outcome was possible.

Complete Recovery From Anxiety And Panic. The only Book You Will Ever Need In Your Search For Answers, Written By Ex-Sufferer Paul David.

So forget instant cures, prepare yourself for some work, and be open to a positive outcome. Then start hunting out the therapies that have been proven to work, and chose the one that’s best for you. It doesn’t have to be expensive (I cured myself from books), and it doesn’t have to be horrid. You will succeed.

Look out for my follow up articles where I discuss other issues to getting over anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. I will post details on www.anxiety2calm.com, where all information is given away for free.

I am an ex-anxiety sufferer campaigning against expensive gimmicks targeted at vulnerable anxiety sufferers by cynical businessmen. I set up http://www.anxiety2calm.com to examine various therapies, techniques and gimmicks sold as a cure for anxiety, panic attacks and phobias. I also have sections on meditation, EFT, TFT, Journey Therapy, and much much more.

Stress - How To Manage Effectively

Written by rob on Thursday, September 27th, 2007 in stress.

The Solution To Stress. Use effective, simple techniques to treat stress from the root - no matter what the root is.

Stress is very common in all walks of life and in all occupations. There are different kinds of stress, such as acute, episodic and chronic. Each one has its own list of symptoms and triggers that set it off. Chronic stress is the most dangerous one because it can affect a persons health and welfare and lead to depression if he/she cannot develop methods of stress relief. This is the gnawing feeling that people encounter day after day. It can be related to work, an unhappy marriage, money problems or a whole host of things that cause people to become very unhappy with their lives. People who suffer from this condition often cannot see anything good about their lives, It can lead to suicide, heart attacks and as research has shown, cancer.

Tip! Learn yoga or tai chi, perfect pastimes for reducing stress.

We hear all about post-traumatic stress disorder from men and women who return from war and stressful situations. However, there are many things that can cause this disorder, such as abuse in childhood, rape or any other experience that may have been traumatic. People who are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder usually exhibit three different types of symptoms:

Tip! Remember hard work is less stressful than boredom.

· Flashbacks where the person feels he/she is reliving the event

· Avoidance where he/she works to avoid any situations that might bear even a remote resemblance to the experience

· Arousal where the person is easily startled or jumpy
Psychotherapy is one treatment that has met with a lot of success in treating post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Using exercise as a form of stress relief has many benefits. New research suggests that exercising as a way of stress management helps people to improve their minds as well as their bodies because they become fit, giving them a whole new feeling about themselves. Another aspect of stress management involves making changes in your life to help you reduce the events that trigger your episodes. In some cases this may be a simple matter of getting out more often or it can mean changing jobs or careers.

Tip! Do what you can to minimise stressful situations. If you face a mad rush in the mornings, for example, get up earlier, have your clothes and paperwork ready.

You have to think about what is causing you to become stressed and if it is possible to avoid these things. Some events that can trigger stressful episodes may be alleviated by simply changing your route to work each day or gradually pulling away from friends that seem to be depressing and pull you down. You can look at the way you respond to certain incidents or people and if you feel stressed because it seems that people are always invading your private time, you need to learn to say “No” once in a while.

Tip! Take time to listen and act. If a stress issue is raised, be seen to be taking it seriously.

Stress symptoms can include not being able to sleep, constantly worrying about things beyond your control and even aches and pains in your body. These symptoms of stress can eventually lead to more serious diseases such as heart problems. You do need to talk to someone who can help, such as your doctor. If your work stress is the cause of your illness and if you are experiencing problems with your heart, the doctor may need to send you for a stress test to determine whether or not there is a serious problem developing.

Teen stress is one of the leading causes of suicide among teenagers who are unable to cope with all the pressures that seem to come at them from all sides. Feeling left out of popular groups or being constantly teased at school is one of the leading causes of teen depression and has led to some teenagers actually shooting their tormentors. Even a child as young as two or three years of age can feel stressed when he/she is trying to live up to the parents expectations of being a good boy or girl. School age children have pressures on them from all sides schoolwork, parents and friends.

Tip! Trying to be king of the hill is ok so long as it remains a game. When it becomes a stressful, obsessive and competitive desire to win no matter the cost, you’ve got a problem.

Stress balls and stress relievers are ways that people have used as stress management techniques. The stress balls are small round balls filled with beads or other squeezable material that you can squeeze. The method may sound silly but many people swear by these stress relievers because the squeezing motion affects not only your hand, but your whole arm and seems to provide an outlet for the pent up stress inside your body. Some stress reducing tips that might help you in coping with stress are:

· Take care of your body by exercising and eating well-balanced meals.

· Learn to relax and if you need to stop once in a while and breathe deeply, holding the breath to the count of 10.

· Yoga is an excellent method of coping with stress because it teaches you to relax and become more in tune with your inner self.

Tip! Get moving: Exercise releases endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that act as a natural mood-elevator. If that’s not enough to give you a boost, setting aside time each day for exercise will help strengthen your body to more effectively fight off stress-induced illness.

· Try to look at situations in different lights and have a more positive outlook on what you do.

· Learn to live with what you have and this will make life a lot easier on you.

If none of these tips work, you may need to seek the help of your healthcare professional.
